Best Time to Visit Tower Bridge: Weather and Daylight

The best time to visit Tower Bridge depends on the daylight, the weather and whether you plan to explore the towers, walk by the river or combine the bridge with the Tower of London.

  • Entry tickets and walking tours explained
  • Glass floor, bridge lifts and nearby sights
  • Practical advice for both riverbanks

Best time to visit Tower Bridge: plan around your day

The best time to visit Tower Bridge depends on what you want to do. The road-level crossing is an outdoor walk, while the ticketed visit takes you through the towers, high walkways and historic Engine Rooms. Part of the route to the Engine Rooms is outside, as is some of the wait to enter. Allow room in your plans for a change in weather and check the forecast close to your visit.

Longer daylight gives you more opportunity to explore the riverbanks before or after an indoor visit. In winter, schedule the outdoor views earlier if daylight matters to you. You can still cross the bridge after the attraction closes, but a crossing is a separate experience from visiting the walkways and the glass floor.

Tower Bridge weather and the seasons

The Met Office climate averages for Heathrow from 1991 to 2020 offer a useful London comparison, rather than a forecast or a measurement taken on the bridge. They describe average daily highs and lows and average monthly rainfall. Conditions on your chosen day can differ, so use a current forecast when packing.

In spring the Heathrow average daily high rises from 11.7°C in March to 18.4°C in May. March averages 38.8 mm of rain and May 45.9 mm. Spring can suit a plan that mixes the indoor route with a walk between the bridge and the Tower, with a layer and rain protection ready for the outdoor sections.

In summer, the July average high is 23.9°C and the average low is 14.2°C. July rainfall averages 45.8 mm. These figures are averages, not a promise of sunshine. Bring water and check the day's conditions before a longer walk; a change of weather need not prevent you from seeing the indoor exhibits.

September has an average high of 20.2°C and 49.6 mm of rain in the Heathrow series. By November, the average high is 11.5°C and rainfall is 66.6 mm. Winter is cooler: January averages a high of 8.4°C and a low of 2.7°C. Rain occurs throughout the year, so an outer layer is useful in any season.

Daylight, evening views and the indoor route

For a winter day, consider seeing the riverbanks in daylight and leaving the indoor visit for the time on your ticket. The Royal Observatory Greenwich gives London's shortest day as 7 hours, 49 minutes and 42 seconds of daylight. That comparison is not a sunrise or sunset time calculated for the bridge. Look up the forecast and local daylight for your date before choosing an itinerary.

The bridge visit begins in the North Tower, continues along both high walkways and descends through the South Tower. The Blue Line then leads to the Engine Rooms. As part of that connection is outdoors, keep your coat accessible rather than treating the whole route as an indoor museum. See the glass floor and visitor route for the sequence.

After the visitor attraction closes, an outdoor crossing or a view from the riverbank can round off the day. Check your route back and allow for the conditions. The image of the bridge at sunset is an illustration of a view, not a promise of a particular sky or a late indoor opening.

Choose a date and combine visits

Tower Bridge normally opens at 09:30 and closes at 18:00, with last entry at 17:00. It closes from 24 to 26 December and opens at 10:00 on 1 January. Check the date and time on your booking, and see the opening hours before you travel. A bridge lift can delay entry, so leave some flexibility between timed plans.

A lift serves river traffic and is not a daily show. If watching one matters to you, consult the schedule for the date and ship and allow for changes. Our bridge lift guide explains how to plan a viewing from the riverbank. An indoor ticket does not promise a lift during your visit.

The Tower of London is a different attraction on the north side of the river. Its operator suggests allowing two to three hours. A reserved guided Tower visit can be paired with the bridge, but choose each booking for the experience it actually offers. Read the Tower of London guide and check the relevant opening times for your date before arranging the order.

Frequently asked questions

Is summer the only time to visit?

No. The indoor route operates throughout the year apart from specified closures. Choose a date based on the weather you prefer, daylight and your other plans.

Should I book for a particular time?

Your bridge ticket is tied to a date and time. Choose a slot that leaves room for travel and check the current opening hours and booking conditions.

Can I see a bridge lift in any season?

Lifts depend on ships and can take place by day or night. Check the lift calendar for your date and leave room for changes.
