Tower Bridge Hotels: Where to Stay on Both Banks

Tower Bridge hotels can put you on either side of the Thames. Compare Tower Hill and Tower Gateway with London Bridge and Southwark before choosing your base.

Tower Bridge hotels: which bank suits your plans?

Tower Bridge hotels are a location choice as much as a room choice. Tower Hill and Tower Gateway place your search on the north side, near the Tower of London and the direction of St Katharine Docks. London Bridge and Southwark offer a south-bank starting point with Underground and National Rail connections. Choose according to the entrance you need, your onward journey and the walks you want to make.

The bridge itself links the banks on road level. Its ticketed visitor route starts at the North Tower and ends with the Engine Rooms on the south side. A hotel address near the bridge on a map does not tell you everything about the approach to your room or to a particular entrance. Check the actual route, including steps and lifts, before booking.

Tower Hill and Tower Gateway on the north bank

Start your search around Tower Hill or Tower Gateway if the Tower of London, the bridge's North Tower entrance and St Katharine Docks are central to your plans. The areas give you a north-bank starting point, but the exact walk depends on the address and the entrance you use. Locate the accommodation on a map and check the route with your luggage, not just the distance to the bridge itself.

Tower Hill station is served by the District and Circle lines. The bridge operator gives a walk of about 500 metres to its ticket office and describes step-free access from the platform to the street. If you need a lift, check its operating status and the route between station, accommodation and attraction on your travel day. A step-free station does not establish the layout of a particular hotel.

The Tower of London is a separate attraction from Tower Bridge. You might visit the Tower first, then approach the North Tower for your booked bridge slot. The Tower's operator suggests two to three hours for its visit. Read the Tower of London guide and check the date-specific opening arrangements before fitting both visits into one day.

St Katharine Docks is another direction for a self-guided walk from the north end of the bridge. Allow yourself time to explore the area and return to the public route you have chosen. Our Docks and Shad Thames guide describes the two-bank itinerary without assuming access to private walkways.

London Bridge and Southwark on the south bank

London Bridge station is useful to consider if your journey involves National Rail, the Jubilee line or the Northern line. The bridge operator describes step-free access from train to street and places the Engine Rooms entrance roughly one kilometre from the station. This is a different approach from Tower Hill, so check the walk to your own accommodation as well as the route to the attraction.

A south-bank base can work well if you want to begin by the river, cross to the North Tower for your timed visit and finish at the Engine Rooms. The visitor route begins on the north side, so being near the south end does not mean that the Engine Rooms are the starting point. The visitor route explains the order of the towers, walkways and Engine Rooms.

Shad Thames is on the south-east side of the bridge. Its warehouse setting provides a different riverside walk from the Docks on the north side. Plan around public routes and check local access on the day. If your return is after dark, review the actual route to your accommodation in advance and choose the connections that fit your plans.

Arrival, luggage and lift access

Before reserving a room, check the route from the station you will actually use. London Bridge and Fenchurch Street are rail connections listed for the Tower area; Tower Hill also offers Underground connections. Your journey depends on where you begin. Our getting there guide compares the approaches and provides details for planning onward travel.

Ask the accommodation about its own entrance, lift and arrangements for luggage if those are important to you. Tower Bridge limits bags to 45 ร— 35 ร— 20 cm and does not permit suitcases or wheeled bags. The Tower of London does not accept suitcases, large bags or wheeled luggage and has no luggage storage. Plan where your bags will be before either visit, particularly on arrival or departure day.

There are lifts in both bridge towers and an outside lift on the south-east side, but lifts can be temporarily unavailable. Check current access information before travelling if you rely on them. A room close to a station or landmark is only one part of an accessible route: the hotel entrance, pavements, station access and attraction all need separate consideration.

Frequently asked questions

Which side is closest to the visitor entrance?

The ticketed route starts at the North Tower. Check the actual walk from your chosen address rather than using the riverbank alone as a distance measure.

Can I take a suitcase into the attractions?

Suitcases and wheeled bags are not permitted at Tower Bridge or the Tower of London. Arrange your luggage before visiting and check each attraction's rules.

Can I combine the Tower and bridge in one day?

Yes, with a plan for the separate visits and tickets. Allow for the Tower visit, your bridge time slot, travel between them and any changes on the day.
