St Katharine Docks and the two banks
St Katharine Docks lie beside the northern end of Tower Bridge. Their basins make a natural starting point for a walk that continues across the bridge to Shad Thames on the south bank. This route brings together a former dock complex, the river crossing and a street shaped by warehouse trade. It is a self-guided itinerary, so you can decide how long to spend at each stop.
Begin at the marina, return towards the bridge and cross on the pavement. The street-level crossing is free; a visit inside the towers and upper walkways is a separate attraction. Use our arrival guide to choose a station and see Tower Bridge tickets if you want to add the interior. Allow for your own pace rather than treating the walk as a timed route.

A City of London walking tour
A guided City walk includes Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast among its sights; plan the docks and Shad Thames separately.
From working docks to marina
The name comes from the former hospital of St Katharine's by the Tower. Thomas Telford's plan created connected eastern and western basins with a lock connection to the Thames, and the docks opened on 25 October 1828. Looking across the water today, the two basins give the area its structure and help explain why water access was central to the site.
The buildings around the basins are not all unchanged Victorian warehouses. Bombing in 1940 destroyed the warehouses around the eastern basin, while the western basin saw further demolition and rebuilding in the early 1970s. That mixture of periods is part of the story: look at the relationship between basin and surrounding buildings rather than expecting every frontage to date from the opening.
Follow available public routes around the water and check signs at the locks and entrances. Marina operations, private pontoons and working areas are separate from a visitor's walk. Access arrangements can change, so leave room in your route to retrace your steps if a particular crossing is unavailable.
Shad Thames and the warehouse walkways
After returning to Tower Bridge, cross to its southern side and continue towards Shad Thames. The raised bridges between warehouse buildings are a distinctive feature of the street. They show how closely the buildings were connected to the movement and storage of goods, even though the neighbourhood's uses have changed since its working waterfront days.
Butler's Wharf forms a distinct part of the area's industrial history. A warehouse fire there in 1931 is recorded by the London Fire Brigade. It is a historical event, not a description of conditions on your visit. The old walkways are best appreciated from public routes; do not assume that the buildings or elevated connections are open for visitors to enter.
Take time to look back towards the bridge as well as along the street. The contrast between its towers and the former warehouses is a useful way to understand how transport and river trade shaped opposite banks. For more on the bridge itself, continue with its architecture or history.
Build a longer day around the bridge
The docks walk works on its own or alongside a ticketed visit. The bridge's interior route includes the upper walkways and Engine Rooms, while the Tower of London is a separate historic site on the north bank. Check each attraction's opening information and booking conditions before arranging both in one day.
On the south bank, HMS Belfast is a museum ship reached from The Queen's Walk. A guided City walking tour can add context for sights around the bridge, but the self-guided route to the docks and Shad Thames is independent of that product. Choose the combination that leaves enough time to enjoy each place.
If you hope to see the bridge open, consult the lift calendar before setting out. Openings serve river traffic and can interrupt a crossing; choose a safe place on one bank and follow local instructions. A walk across the bridge does not include a guaranteed opening.
St Katharine Docks: questions and answers
Can I combine the docks with Shad Thames?
Yes. Return to Tower Bridge from the docks, cross to the south bank and continue towards Shad Thames using available public routes.
Are the docks entirely Victorian?
The basins opened in 1828, but wartime destruction and later redevelopment changed the buildings around them.
Does the walk include Tower Bridge's interior?
The street-level crossing and the ticketed interior are separate. Reserve a suitable ticket if you want to visit the upper walkways and Engine Rooms.
Can I enter the elevated warehouse walkways?
Enjoy their appearance from public routes and respect signs for private buildings and access points.
